India produces the highest number of feature films in a year. The number is double that of the Hollywood productions.

India is the largest producer of films in the world and very old film industry in the world which originated around about 103 years ago. In 2009 India produced a total of 2,961 films on celluloid, that includes 1,288 feature films. In 2012, India produced a staggering figure of 1,602 feature films. Indian film industry reached overall revenues of $1.86 billion (INR 93 billion) in 2011. This is projected to rise to $3 billion (INR 150 billion) in 2016. India is the country that produces more films annually and has the largest number of admissions.

Indian film industry is multi-lingual and the largest in the world in terms of ticket sales and number of films produced and 5th largest in terms of revenue. Largest film industry in India is the Hindi film industry mostly concentrated in Mumbai, and is commonly referred to as "Bollywood", an amalgamation of Bombay, which produces around 20% of films in India. The other largest film industries are Telugu cinema, Tamil cinema, Malayalam cinema, Bangla cinema, and Kannada cinema, which are located in Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata and Bangalore are commonly referred to as "Tollywood"(Telugu), "Kollywood"(Tamil), "Mollywood"(Malayalam), "Tollywood"(Bangla) and "Sandalwood"(Kannada).

Indian cinema is viewed all over the Indian Subcontinent, and is increasingly popular in UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Gulf countries and European countries having large Indian population. Not surprising that Indian cinema found markets in over 90 countries.

WORLD'S LARGEST FILM STUDIO COMPLEX

The largest integrated film production complex is the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad which opened in 1996 with 47 sound stages. Spread over an picturesque 2,500 acres and studded with hills, woods, lakes and striking architecture, it provides camera equipment, set construction, properties, costumes, audio post production, digital post-production / SFX and film processing. Guinness World Records certifies Ramoji Film City as the World's Largest Film Studio Complex. Film producer Ramoji Rao, head of the Ramoji Group, opened the facility in 1996.

It is also a popular tourist attraction as there are top class facilities to promote tourism. A Japanese garden, the ETV planet (a multi-purpose editing suit), a pool, artificial waterfalls, breathtakingly accurate airport terminal, hospital set, railway station, churches, mosques and temples, shopping plazas, palace interiors, chateaus, rural complexes, urban dwellings, and a winding highway are some other places for tourists to visit. The Film City even has honeymoon packages for the newly married couples who are on the lookout for a getaway destination. It caters to the corporate world by offering banquet halls.

For shopping enthusiasts, there are nice handicrafts, pottery and other decorative articles for purchase. Magadha, Meena Bazaar, Frontierland or Black Cat Warehouse are a few avenues from where the visitors can carry home souvenirs of their visit.

WORLD'S YOUNGEST FILM DIRECTOR

In November 2006, Kishan Srikanth was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the youngest person to direct a professional feature film. He replaces Sydney Ling, who was thirteen in 1973 when he directed the Dutch film Lex the Wonderdog.

Kishan directed the film 'C/o Footpath' at the age of 9 and became the world's youngest director of a professionally made feature film. 'C/O Footpath' is the story of an orphan slum boy who is adopted by an elderly woman who finds him on a footpath. Kishan is already such a big name in the industry that he managed to convince Bollywood star Jackie Shroff, comedy actor Saurav Shukla and national award-winning Kannada actress Thaara to star in his film.
